How do payments work with the Payment Cartridge?

The Payments Portal handles payments in different ways, depending on the type of goods or services that the customer is purchasing with their order.

Physical goods

When a customer places an order for physical goods, the Payments Portal runs a pre-authorization on their credit card. Once you ship the goods to them, you can finalize the transaction by using the Payment Cartridge to capture the payment.

Virtual goods

When a customer places an order for virtual goods or services, the Payments Portal runs an instant sale on their credit card. You do not need to capture transactions for virtual goods or services.

Gift card payments

When a customer pays using a gift card, the Payments Portal runs an instant sale whether the customer is buying physical goods, virtual goods, or services.
