What is the difference between a dynamic IP address and a static IP address?

A Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) server assigns IP addresses automatically to devices on a network. These IP address are known as dynamic as the DHCP server can reassign addresses. We configure Genius devices to accept dynamic IP addresses by default.

The DHCP server can assign a new dynamic IP address if:

  • There is a disruption in network connectivity
  • The DHCP server is rebooted

When your Genius device's IP address changes, it can no longer communicate with the POS. To restore communications, you need to update your POS with your Genius device's new IP address.

Static IP addresses

Static IP addresses are manually configured and do not change. We recommend configuring a static IP address on your Genius device if your DHCP server frequently changes assigned IP addresses.
